A sma11, cosy and peaceful 42-beeJroom hotel by Kongens Have (the King's Garden; see p98), the Christian IV is the only hotel in this central residential area. It also stands out for a charm and intimacy that is rare among Copenhagen's three-star hotels, and for the modern Danish designer furniture with which a11 rooms are equipped. The location is a chic one for a hotel in this category Rosenborg Slot built by the eponymous Danish king, is at the end of the street, while the royal residence of Amalienborg Slot is the same distance in the opposite direction.

Ibsens

Ibsens is a lovely three-star hotel with a brand-new reception, breakfast room and bar. It's a romantic place, with flowery curtains and flowers on the balconies of this typical Danish 19th-century building. The location (near N0rreport station) is about as central as you can get in Copenhagen (only the uninformed think the area around Tivoli is the centre). Hotel services Laundry. No·smoking floor. Hotel Centrum is one of the few two-star hotels in Copenhagen, with very basic rooms. It's safe and clean enough, though, and the staff are very welcoming. Located in the hotel-dense area just west of Central Station, it has a connecting Thai restaurant that serves good, cheap food. Note that not every room has its own TV, and that only 50 of the 79 rooms are en suite.

Hotel Selandia

The ]0rgensen has a few tiny double and single rooms with their own toilet/bath, and it clean but uncharming dormitory in the basement. A young Icelandic couple started up this hotel (on the top floor of a century-old building) in 1998, pitching the place somewhere between a pension, a sleep-in and a hoteL The atmosphere is cool and cosy with a nice cafe and a fine views from the fifth floor. Some rooms are en suite, and a number have good views over the rooftops. A good place for visitors of all ages
