Wedgewood Hotel & Spa
During rush hour, the sidewalks of Robson Street in Vancouver, British Columbia, fill with smartly dressed Canadians carrying yoga mats and shopping bags. But turn right off Robson at the Vancouver Art Gallery, and you land on the quieter Hornby Street, home to Eleni Skalbania's Wedgewood Hotel & Spa. Mter purchasing the Mayfair Apartment Hotel in the 1980s, Greek-born Skalbania gutted the building and converted it into the 83-room Wedgewood. Most recently, she completed renovations of the hotel's four penthouses, which now offer living rooms with fireplaces, bathrooms with spas, and French doors that open onto private garden terraces. Subtler touches can be found at turndown: Housekeeping leaves a pair offreshly baked cookies next to a television guide opened to the evening's listings and a remote control for the room's plasma TV ($270-$1,200) 604.689.7777, www.wedgewoodhotel.com |
